"The negative impacts due to alien species are expected to intensify in the near future due to the increased opportunities of invasion associated with climate change, the augmented pathways of introductions and the synergic effects of climate change" (Mazza et al., 2013). With his presentation titled Nuove geografie climatiche del futuro: come sarà l'Eurafrica ? Mercalli will give to the final RARITY day a significant contribution in terms of experience and expertise that will certainly attract the interest of a large public. See the programme of the day, and print and diffuse the invitation. Read the interview to Luca Mercalli published by the newspaper "Il Messaggero Veneto" on the 20.XI.2014. 10 October 2014 "ALIENS AMONG US" IN THE SECTION "FUORI CONCORSO" AT THE FONTANIVA GEO FILM FESTIVAL The RARITY movie "Aliens among us" directed by Giulio Kirchmayr has been included in the film section "fuori concorso" of the Fontaniva Geo Film Festival. 9 October 2014 EELS INTO THE "BRANCOLO" ETP has released into the "Canale Brancolo" (Gorizia) about 200 kg of eels. The sowing is part of a regional and national programme for the conservation of the species (which is definitely decreasing all over Europe). The eels will remain in the area until they reach the sexual maturity (likely in 3-5 years) when they will move to the sea. This liberation follows a similar release that took place at the end of December 2012 and represents a further step of the RARITY strategy for contrasting the diffusion of the red swamp. The eel is in fact an active predator of the crayfish juveniles and its presence into the Brancolo will surely contribute to limit the expansion of the Louisiana red swamp (especially of ifs southern populations inhabiting the so-called "Bonifica Sacchetti", or "Alberoni", where ETP has already removed from the site about 4,000 individuals of Procambarus clarkii).

The volunteer fishing guards and collaborators have then carried out the field activities that allowed for the collection of a huge and unique set of data and information. The Region Friuli Venezia Giulia became a true "experimental field" and the volunteers' job the way leading to the creation, deepening and elaboration of data and knowledge extremely significant about the distribution, genetics, taxonomy of native crayfish and also about several other issues dealing with the biology and ecology of native and alien crayfish species. Now the RARITY project invites all ETP volunteer personnel to a meeting for upgrading the training information which has the aim to make available and to explain the achieved project results and to outline the importance of the human contribution given by ETP people. Who wishes to participate in the meeting, in the eveng of the 14th in Udine or in the morning of the 15th in Cordenons, can find the proper information at this page.

2014 BIOLOGICAL INVADERS ARE THREATS TO HUMAN HEALTH: AN OVERVIEW Within a special issue of “Ethology Ecology & Evolution” dedicated to Francesca Gherardi (precociously deceased on February 2013), online since December 2013 and which will be published soon also by means of a RARITY contribution, it appears the overview on biological invaders by F. Gherardi, part of the RARITY staff from UNIFI (Giuseppe Mazza and Elena Tricarico) and P. Genovesi (ISPRA). The paper identifies four categories of invasive species: 1. species causing diseases or infections; 2. exposing humans to wounds from bites/stings, biotoxins, allergens or toxicants; 3. faciliting diseases, injuries or death; and 4. inflicting other negative effects on human livelihood. Invasive species (among which Procambaruis clarkii occupies a main position) affect human health via several ways, i.e. as alien pathogens and invaders that bring/facilitate parasites or produce toxins. Their negative impacts are expected to intensify in the near future due to the increased opportunities of invasions associated with climate change and the augmented pathways of introductions associated to globalization processes. It is imperative to improve the understanding of the pathways of arrival of invasive species affecting human health, their biological patterns and the mechanisms of impact, because all this information is essential to develop more effective and stringent policies for preventing and mitigating the negative effects that these species cause.
